Extreme Grocery Experiment: Week 1

The Green Beans emerge!

Today marks the first full week of April, and thus commences our Extreme Grocery Experiment. It's going to be an interesting month.

I'm changing my grocery shopping days to Tuesday, to take advantage of the sale fliers by knowing what's actually on sale before I get there.

Grocery Budget for April: $350
Estimated Spending for week - $190. This is for the monthly store-able staples I've allowed myself, any meat that's $1.50/lb or less (up to $8 worth), and the week's perishables like milk, eggs, produce. I won't bore you with the whole list... Yet.

The Menu Plan:
Monday: Sausage & Potato Casserole - using the rest of the potatoes we have and sausage in freezer
Tuesday: Refried Beans & Rice, Tortillas - Using dried beans and rice on hand, tortillas on hand
Wednesday: Teriyaki Chicken & Rice - Using leftover chicken, with plain (or maybe fried) rice
Thursday: Cheeseburger Mac - Buy bacon & cheese, use pasta and ground beef on hand
Friday: Biscuits & Gravy (or breakfast of some kind) - Buy bacon, use freezer sausage, make biscuits
Saturday: Undecided
Sunday: Sunday Chicken, french bread, potatoes, and a veggie (I'm starting a new "Big Sunday Meal" tradition. We did it last night and it was really nice.)

That's the plan!

Wow, I can't wait to see how the experiment turns out. Need eggs? I have some if you want to come by on your way to shopping or on your way home. :)

One thing I've pondered doing is using the entire weekly meat budget on one giant cut of meat, like a pork butt. Then cooking it, shredding it, and using it in meals the rest of the week (sandwiches, tacos, enchiladas, etc.)

Also, I like the idea of the big Sunday dinner. I've noticed that when we do that, it gets Monday off to a much better start. But when I skimp and we have, like, nachos or something light, Monday is a drag.

Kess: Maybe that's why Sunday dinner is so nice. Today does seem to be a rather nice Monday, having had a big relaxing dinner last night.

I do that with large hunks of meat a lot and it works great. I don't think we've ever had a giant roast as a dinner by itself. I usually crock pot it and then use a portion in a meal that night, and the leftovers go to other meals. It's great, and really saves on meat!

So if you fail the challenge, maybe you can get a hold of some Tiki torches and then have Ben snuff them with a hollowed-out coconut and say, "you are voted off of the extreme grocery experiment... island."

350 dollars for a whole month? Do let me know if you make it - you are an inspiration! I've been really careful about shopping, but vegetables and fruit alone for the weekend came to about 50 dollars!

What is Cheeseburger Mac?
