When The Lights Go Down In the City

Name that band!

Yesterday I was really frustrated. I couldn't think of anything "worthy" to write about and was afraid I would slip into a blog lull again, not writing for a week or better. I was really hoping that I would find something to write about.

Well, ask and ye shall receive.

Last night our power went out! About 5 o'clock I was in the kitchen making dinner and washing up dishes when the lights dimmed a bit. I thought "What was that?" but kept washing. Then the lights went out. And came back on. And went out again. For good.

So we pulled out all the candles and I was once again thankful for my gas stove that allowed me to finish cooking dinner. We ate by candle light, and I washed dishes by candle light.

The kids were bouncing around with nothing to do in the dark, so I brought out my laptop and put in a movie for them to watch. (Yay for modern conveniences.)

I have bags and bags and bags of little votive candles left over from our wedding 4 years ago, so I ripped open a bag and placed a bunch in a disposable aluminum baking tray. That one tray lit the whole kitchen so well it almost felt like the lights were on. Although Ben did make a joke about BBQ-ing on it.

I just love when the power goes out. I have an obsession with candles and power outages mean I get to use them! Everyone else was sitting around with nothing to do (until I put the movie on). But not me. No no. Armed with a book light and a few candles I could still knit on those fingerless mitts. (Fortunately I was past the detailed work and just on the ribbing so I didn't really need to see very well.)

It was a good night for a power outage. And I think the best part was that as soon as the lights went out, every person in our little 6 house section of the neighborhood was out checking on each other and making sure everyone had candles. I love our little group of neighbors. Just another sign that we picked the right house.

The lights finally came back on around 9:30. We figure it was a car wreck, because during dinner we heard sirens. It's not the first time someone has taken out a power pole around here. I just hope whatever it was, whoever it was, they're alright and the pole was the only thing destroyed.

Have a well lit day,
Meg

It looks so cozy and so homey. I like how you put the candles in the foil pan, I never thought about doing that. It looks all so pretty by candle light. So glad you had something to post about.

This is right up my alley. I light at least 5-10 candles every night and cuddle up in my knitting corner - it is my favorite time of day. About eight years ago we had a major power outage that lasted four days (in the dead of winter, too!). We froze just a bit, but candles and instant soup made it cheery, and we spent a lot of time together huddling. I was just a bit sad when the power came back on. :)

What nice neighbors you seem to have! Can you take a picture of your street at some point? I'm kind of curious about how your little world looks. :)

I loved reading this Meg. It sounds like a cozy evening for the whole family. I loved that photo of the votives in the tin. What a great idea.
Blessings,
Marcia
