Successful Failure

This was my sad attempt at bagels.

I had found a recipe in the Feed Your Family for $12 a Day book and thought "Hey, I can do that!". I love bagels and it was much more cost effective to make them myself than buy them. I got double the bagels for half the price. Or, that was the idea anyways. It was going great until I got to the part where I had to boil them.

To make the bagels you create your dough, let it rise, then form up your bagels and let them rise again. After they are the size you want, you boil them and then bake them. The problem I had was that when rising, the underside didn't dry out enough so the dough was still a bit sticky. Which meant that when I put them in the boiling water they... sort of fell apart. Thus the poor, deform "bagels" in the picture. For the last three I decided not to boil them and bake them as is. They all turned out very tasty, just not as a decent bagel.

So... the bagel experiment is going to take some more experimenting. However, Ben came in, tried them, and said they were just like Ciabatta bread and that it looked like I had found my sandwich roll recipe. I have tried and tried for two years to make a decent Ciabatta bread but they always turn out too flat. Turns out I just had to attempt to make bagels. Ha!

Ah the sad experiments when trying to make something you end up making something else that you like better. It happens all the time to me too.
Keep trying with the bagels though, I am curious to see how they turn out and if they taste better homemade.
